Myringotomy
Myringotomy with Grommet Insertion – Patient Information Leaflet
About the Procedure
Myringotomy with grommet insertion is a short procedure where a small cut is made in the eardrum to drain trapped fluid from the middle ear. A tiny ventilation tube (grommet) is placed in the incision to help air the middle ear and prevent fluid from building up again. This is commonly done in both children and adults with frequent ear infections or glue ear (fluid behind the eardrum).
Preoperative Care
- You will have an ENT consultation to confirm the need for surgery.
- A hearing test may be performed.
- If under general anaesthesia, you must avoid eating or drinking for a few hours before the procedure (you will be given specific fasting instructions).
- Usually done as a day-case under general anaesthetic.
Postoperative Care
- Most patients go home the same day.
- Mild ear discomfort or temporary hearing changes are normal.
- Avoid getting water into the ears while the grommets are in place – use ear protection when bathing or swimming.
- Grommets usually fall out on their own after 6–12 months.
- A follow-up hearing test may be arranged.
