Adenoidectomy
Adenoidectomy – Patient Information Leaflet
About the Procedure
Adenoidectomy is the surgical removal of the adenoids—small lymphoid tissues located at the back of the nose, above the roof of the mouth. Enlarged adenoids can cause nasal blockage, mouth breathing, snoring, recurrent ear infections, or sinus issues. The surgery is done through the mouth, without any visible cuts.
Preoperative Care
- Your ENT specialist will examine your child’s or your nose and throat.
- In some cases, a hearing test or nasal endoscopy may be performed.
- If general anaesthetic is used, fasting is required for several hours before surgery.
- You will be given instructions on stopping certain medications if needed.
- Please inform your doctor about any cold or respiratory infection in the days before surgery.
Postoperative Care
- Mild sore throat, nasal stuffiness, or snoring is common after surgery.
- Bad breath and a low-grade fever are normal during the healing phase.
- Encourage a soft diet and plenty of fluids.
- Avoid vigorous physical activity for about one week.
- Children can usually return to school within 5–7 days.
- No follow-up is usually needed unless symptoms persist.
FAQs
1. Is the procedure painful?
Mild throat discomfort is expected, but pain is usually much less than after tonsillectomy.
2. How long is the recovery period?
Recovery is usually quick – most children are back to normal in a week.
3. Are there any risks or complications?
Minor bleeding, infection, and nasal voice changes (usually temporary) are possible. Serious complications are rare.
4. Will I need follow-up appointments?
Not usually unless symptoms recur or if surgery was combined with other procedures (like grommet insertion).

Microlaryngoscopy – Patient Information Leaflet
About the Procedure
Microlaryngoscopy is a procedure that allows your surgeon to closely examine and treat problems of the voice box (larynx) using a thin telescope and fine instruments. It is done through the mouth under general anaesthesia and may involve removing polyps, nodules, cysts, or taking biopsies. It is commonly used to diagnose hoarseness, voice changes, or suspected growths on the vocal cords.
Preoperative Care
- You will be assessed by your ENT specialist, who may perform a flexible laryngoscopy and organise a voice assessment or imaging.
- Stop smoking before surgery, as it affects healing.
- You will be advised to fast (no food or drink) for several hours before general anaesthesia.
- Inform your doctor of any medication, especially blood thinners.
Postoperative Care
- You may experience a sore throat, hoarseness, or mild discomfort for a few days.
- Avoid speaking, whispering, or throat-clearing for the first few days (voice rest may be recommended).
- Use steam inhalation and drink plenty of fluids.
- Avoid smoking, alcohol, and spicy foods during recovery.
- You will be seen in follow-up to assess your voice and review biopsy results if taken.
- Further voice therapy may be recommended in some cases.
FAQs
1. Is the procedure painful?
There may be mild throat soreness or discomfort, but the procedure itself is painless due to anaesthesia.
2. How long is the recovery period?
Most people feel better within a few days, but voice healing may take 1–2 weeks depending on the underlying condition.
3. Are there any risks or complications?
Rare risks include bleeding, infection, scarring of the vocal cords, or temporary hoarseness.
4. Will I need follow-up appointments?
Yes. Follow-up is essential to monitor healing and review results of any biopsies taken.
