Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery

Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) – Patient Information Leaflet

About the Procedure

FESS is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat chronic sinus problems. Using a small camera (endoscope) and specialised instruments, the surgeon removes inflamed tissue, polyps, or blockages from the sinuses. The procedure is done through the nostrils, without any external cuts, and helps improve sinus drainage, reduce infections, and restore normal breathing.

Preoperative Care

  • You will have an ENT consultation with nasal endoscopy and a CT scan to assess your sinuses.
  • You may be given a course of nasal sprays, antibiotics, or steroids before surgery.
  • Fasting is required for several hours before surgery under general anaesthesia.
  • Stop any blood-thinning medication if advised.
  • Avoid smoking before surgery to improve healing.

Postoperative Care

  • Expect some nasal blockage, mild bleeding, or discomfort for a few days.
  • Avoid nose blowing, heavy lifting, and bending forward for at least a week.
  • Use saline nasal sprays or rinses regularly to keep the nasal passages clear.
  • Avoid dusty or smoky environments.
  • A follow-up appointment will be arranged to clean the nose and monitor healing.
