Microlaryngoscopy

Microlaryngoscopy – Patient Information Leaflet

About the Procedure

Microlaryngoscopy is a procedure that allows your surgeon to closely examine and treat problems of the voice box (larynx) using a thin telescope and fine instruments. It is done through the mouth under general anaesthesia and may involve removing polyps, nodules, cysts, or taking biopsies. It is commonly used to diagnose hoarseness, voice changes, or suspected growths on the vocal cords.

Preoperative Care

  • You will be assessed by your ENT specialist, who may perform a flexible laryngoscopy and organise a voice assessment or imaging.
  • Stop smoking before surgery, as it affects healing.
  • You will be advised to fast (no food or drink) for several hours before general anaesthesia.
  • Inform your doctor of any medication, especially blood thinners.

Postoperative Care

  • You may experience a sore throat, hoarseness, or mild discomfort for a few days.
  • Avoid speaking, whispering, or throat-clearing for the first few days (voice rest may be recommended).
  • Use steam inhalation and drink plenty of fluids.
  • Avoid smoking, alcohol, and spicy foods during recovery.
  • You will be seen in follow-up to assess your voice and review biopsy results if taken.
  • Further voice therapy may be recommended in some cases.

FAQs

1. Is the procedure painful?

There may be mild throat soreness or discomfort, but the procedure itself is painless due to anaesthesia.

2. How long is the recovery period?

Most people feel better within a few days, but voice healing may take 1–2 weeks depending on the underlying condition.

3. Are there any risks or complications?

Rare risks include bleeding, infection, scarring of the vocal cords, or temporary hoarseness.

4. Will I need follow-up appointments?

Yes. Follow-up is essential to monitor healing and review results of any biopsies taken.
