Myringoplasty
Myringoplasty / Tympanoplasty – Patient Information Leaflet
About the Procedure
Myringoplasty and tympanoplasty are surgical procedures to repair a hole (perforation) in the eardrum.
- Myringoplasty involves closing the hole in the eardrum only.
- Tympanoplasty includes repair of the eardrum and any damaged hearing bones in the middle ear.
These procedures help prevent ear infections, stop ear discharge, and improve hearing.
Preoperative Care
- You will be assessed by an ENT specialist and may have a hearing test and imaging (CT scan).
- Smoking should be stopped, as it can affect healing.
- Fasting is required before general anaesthesia – exact instructions will be provided.
- You may be asked to stop certain medications like blood thinners temporarily.
Postoperative Care
Postoperative Care
• A dressing may be placed in the ear canal and sometimes a bandage around the head.
• Mild discomfort, dizziness, or a blocked feeling in the ear is common for a few days.
• Avoid getting water in the ear and refrain from nose-blowing or heavy lifting.
• Hearing may take several weeks to improve fully.
• Follow-up visits are important to check healing and remove any packing if present.
