Parotidectomy

Parotidectomy – Patient Information Leaflet

About the Procedure

Parotidectomy is the surgical removal of part or all of the parotid gland, the largest salivary gland located just in front of and below the ear. The surgery is usually done to remove tumours (benign or malignant), chronic infections, or blockages such as salivary gland stones. Care is taken during surgery to protect the nearby facial nerve, which controls movement of the face.

Preoperative Care

  • You will have an ENT consultation and imaging tests such as ultrasound, MRI, or CT scan.
  • A fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNA) may be performed to help determine the nature of a lump.
  • You’ll be asked to fast before surgery under general anaesthesia.
  • Let your doctor know about any blood-thinning medications or other health conditions.

Postoperative Care

  • A drain may be placed to remove fluid and is usually removed within 24–48 hours.
  • There may be mild swelling, bruising, or numbness around the ear and jaw.
  • Some people experience temporary facial weakness, which usually improves with time.
  • You’ll be advised to keep the area clean and dry and avoid strenuous activity for about 2 weeks.
  • A follow-up appointment will be arranged to check your recovery and discuss any biopsy results.
