Thyroidectomy
Thyroidectomy – Patient Information Leaflet
About the Procedure
Preoperative Care
• You may need to adjust your thyroid medication before surgery.
• Stop smoking if possible, and avoid certain medications like blood thinners as instructed.
• You must fast for several hours before general anaesthesia.
• The procedure and risks will be discussed thoroughly, and consent obtained.
Postoperative Care
• You may have a small drain in your neck to collect fluid (usually removed after 24–48 hours).
• Expect some neck soreness, swelling, or stiffness.
• You might have a hoarse voice or mild difficulty swallowing temporarily.
• If the entire thyroid is removed, you will need daily thyroid hormone replacement (levothyroxine).
• Your calcium levels may be checked, as the nearby parathyroid glands can be affected.
• The scar usually heals well and fades over time.
• A follow-up appointment will be arranged to check results and blood tests.
