Turbinate Reduction
Turbinate Reduction – Patient Information Leaflet
About the Procedure
Turbinate reduction is a surgical procedure to reduce the size of the turbinates – soft tissue structures inside the nose that help filter and humidify the air you breathe. When turbinates become chronically enlarged, they can block airflow and cause persistent nasal congestion. This procedure improves nasal breathing by shrinking or removing excess turbinate tissue.
Preoperative Care
- Your ENT specialist will examine your nose, possibly using a nasal endoscope.
- A CT scan or allergy testing may be done if contributing conditions are suspected.
- You’ll receive fasting instructions if undergoing general anaesthesia.
- Blood thinners or certain medications may need to be stopped before surgery.
- You’ll be advised to stop smoking, which can affect healing.
Postoperative Care
- Nasal congestion, crusting, and mild bleeding are common for a few days.
- Avoid blowing your nose, straining, or exposure to dust and smoke.
- Use saline sprays or rinses to help keep the nose clean and aid healing.
- Most people can return to normal activities within a few days.
- Follow-up appointments will monitor healing and response to treatment.
